NounWikipedia has an article on: CeramicsWikipedia ceramics (uncountable) From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A ceramic is an inorganic, non-metallic solid prepared by the action of heat and subsequent cooling. Ceramic materials may have a crystalline or partly crystalline structure, or may be amorphous (e.g., a glass). Because most common ceramics are crystalline, the definition of ceramic is often restricted to inorganic crystalline materials, as opposed to the non-crystalline glasses. The earliest ceramics were pottery objects made from clay, either by itself or mixed with other materials, hardened in fire. Later ceramics were glazed and fired to create a colored, smooth surface. Ceramics now include domestic, industrial and building products and art objects. In the 20th century, new ceramic materials were developed for use in advanced ceramic engineering; for example, in semiconductors. The word ceramic comes from the Greek word "κεραμικός" (keramikos), "of pottery" or "for pottery", from "κέραμος" (keramos), "potter's clay, tile, pottery" which is said to derive from the Indo-European word *cheros (unattested), meaning heat. The earliest mention on the word "ceramic" is the Mycenaean Greek ke-ra-me-we, "workers of ceramics", written in Linear b syllabic script. Ceramic may be used as an adjective describing a material, product or process; or as a singular noun, or, more commonly, as a plural noun, ceramics. From Wikipedia under the

Asked by stEVie J - Sat Jan 17 17:37:01 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. A combination of things Tap the piece the sound will not be as high as a high fired piece A lot of potters use some metallic glazes on raku Look for a lot of crazing - small cracks - could be accented in black.- Some pieced are pulled from thr kiln and rapidly cooled then reduced in a trash bucket filled with burnable material that the hot piece is put in. A test that can damage the piece is to see if it will hold water - a lot of raku can't It wasn't fired high enough Answered by plainrsc - Sun Jan 18 09:17:16 2009 What to use to give my ceramics a glossy finish? Q. I have made some ceramic dishes on a potters wheel. They are completely glazed and shiny but the bottoms are rough since I could not glaze them. What is a safe product to use to give the bottoms a smooth glossy look? Also I have some bowls that are rough because the glaze did not adhere properly so I would want to use the product on the inside of a bowl. Any suggestions??? Where could I find saddle soap? Also how would I apply the vegetable oil and warm water? Would I make a mixture with more oil than water and coat the bowl? Asked by someone - Tue Jul 28 13:20:01 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Saddle soap on the bottoms of your pots and on the inside a little vegetable oil and warm water (: should do the trick, they will be looking Professional in second :D xx Answered by Georgia - Tue Jul 28 13:27:35 2009 Can a jigsaw blade for ceramics be used to cut porcelain tiles?
Q. Rona has a blade that is used for scrolling etc. but does not mention porecelain. Where can I obtain the most desireable blade and approximate cost? Asked by campbellj@rogers.com - Sun Mar 30 13:46:21 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. get yourself a 4" angle grinder and put a specialist porcelain wheel on it , a normal one for ceramic tiles will take an age to cut through and will chip the edges quite badly, it will also get blunt pretty quickly and end up not going through at all. I use a wheel called a 'Marcrist CK850 ' it costs about 30 but it goes cleanly through the toughest porcelain like a hot knife through butter. You can get them off the net or if you need one quick Builder Center do them. Don't waste your time on the jigsaw blade it won't work!
