Old quarry tiles on kitchen floor?
Q. We have old Quarry tiles on the kitchen floor..we would like to lay ceramic or slate tiles over the top ..we are hoping this will be ok...do you think we will have problems later on?

A. 511 and Tile lab put out a very good sealer. But guess what? Most all Quarry tile don t need to be sealed. Unless you have some thing different, you should only need it to do the grout twice. Now if you have 1 that definitely needs sealing, do it at least once many even twice before installation..Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualififactions there .. GL

A. Exterior tile is best set on a concrete base. Three inches thick is sufficient for foot traffic. (not road rated) If you have an existing concrete base but it is cracked you can apply an anti-fracture membrane to the concrete. Available at most tile stores and easily rolled onto the slab with a paint roller the membrane will prevent cracks from telegraphing up through the new work. If you have an existing concrete walk clean it well then use "thinset" to adhere the tile. Thinset is available at most material yards and has good instructions regarding tools and installation on the bag. Thinset can be applied directly over an anti-fracture membrane. A bucket of clean water and a sponge are important for a good job. Even the most… [cont.]
