From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A roof is the covering on the uppermost part of a building. A roof protects the building and its contents from the effects of weather. Structures that require roofs range from a letter box to a cathedral or stadium, dwellings being the most numerous. In most countries a roof protects primarily against rain. Depending upon the nature of the building, the roof may also protect against heat, sunlight, cold and wind. Other types of structure, for example, a garden conservatory, might use roofing that protects against cold, wind and rain but admits light. A verandah may be roofed with material that protects against sunlight but admits the other elements. The characteristics of a roof are dependent upon the purpose of the building that it covers, the available roofing materials and the local traditions of construction and wider concepts of architectural design and practice and may also be governed by local or national legislation. The elements in the design of a roof are:
The material of a roof may range from banana leaves, wheaten straw or seagrass to lamininated glass, aluminium sheeting and precast concrete. In many parts of the world ceramic tiles have been the predominant roofing material for centuries. The construction of a roof is determined by its method of support and how the underneath space is bridged and whether or not the roof is pitched. The pitch is the angle at which the roof rises from its lowest to highest point. Most domestic architecture, except in very dry regions, has roofs that are sloped, or pitched. The pitch is partly dependent upon stylistic factors, but has more to do with practicalities. Some types of roofing, for example thatch, require a steep pitch in order to be waterproof and durable. Other types of roofing, for example pantiles, are unstable on a steeply pitched roof but provide excellent weather protection at a relatively low angle. In regions where there is little rain, an almost flat roof with a slight run-off provides adequate protection against an occasional downpour. The durability of a roof is a matter of concern because the roof is often the least accessible part of a building for purposes of repair and renewal, while its damage or destruction can have serious effects. GNU Free Documentation License can we divide roof types roofs into three categories depending on their inclination angle? Q. I dont know US standards that well. It is usually mentioned there are low-slope roofs and steep roofs. Flat roofs are explained as part of low-slope roofs. In my country, we categorize them as: Flat Roofs: inclination up to 5 degrees. Low-slope roofs: inclination angle between 5 and 40 degrees. Steep Roofs: inclination angle 40 degrees and above. I am writing a short paper on roof styles depending on their slopes. How should I categorize them? I've seen several businesses that use them, but I can't find out what they are called or anyone who even sells them. It's been difficult to find where to get this simple idea that I'd think someone would have marketed. A restaurant might use it on their metal roof to keep rain and snow from rushing onto a sidewalk following a roof line. They don't look like they would be expensive. I'm just trying to find them or at least what they're called. Asked by Maybe I know, maybe not - Tue Jan 29 00:11:36 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. They are snow strips, go to anyone who sells metal roofing and you will find them, they come in plastic, galvanized and copper. You should be able to yahoo metal roofing and go to a few web sites and you will find them Good Luck Answered by Don M - Tue Jan 29 00:18:06 2008 Is a cedar shake roof more expensive to install than other roofs and why?
Q. I am in WA state and a roofer is telling me that changing the specs from cedar hand split shakes to doing the roof in shingles will cost the same. I thought shakes were more expensive both for materials and labor. Asked by anteater 69 - Wed Dec 6 21:06:27 2006 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. Cedar shake roofs shouldn't be more expensive to install, they are comparable in installation time. But they are certainly more expensive to buy. I have installed both. A home with a shake roof has more street appeal and ups the value of the home. Get a second opinion, the shingles should be cheaper. but the labour costs may be slightly (SLIGHTLY) higher. If you are worried about fire, duroid(shingles) burn too. Shake roofs are not banned in Canada, I just finished the exterior on a $4 million dollar house. ALL luxury homes built here have either tile or shake roofing.
