How would you install salt tiles in a sauna?
Q. Infared Dry Sauna reaches max temp of 150 degrees F. I am familiar with installing Porcelain and Ceramic tiles on floors and countertops. But someone is asking about replacing windows in his dry sauna Himalayan salt tiles. Do you still use cement? How about the grout? Will the salt tiles be able to be cut with a standard saw blade or a diamond blade or something else? Thats supposed to say replace the windows with the Himalayan salt tiles.

A. Himalayan salt tiles are more like bricks or blocks. As you are replacing a window with it I would assume it would be visible from both sides due to its thickness.I would Install it like I would a single pane of glass.Or multiple tiles with mullions. In this application I am thinking they want it for Speleotherapy. Speleotherapy means to be located in a room or area with a presence of Salt Crystal Rock and to breathe the Ionized air. Speleotherapy is a therapeutic measure in the treatment of chronic obstructive airways diseases and as an alternative treatment for asthma.

Can you help me choose colours for kitchen tiles and the walls?
Q. Cupboards - light wood Work surfaces - black Floor - slate grey. Appliances - stainless steel. Two walls are pretty much entirely cupboards with a 45cm strip of tiles. One wall will be painted with just the stainless steel fridge-freezer and radiator and the last wall has the sink, windows, door and the rest painted. My thoughts are: 1) A mixture of silver and shades of purple tiles with main wall purple wall (e.g Dulux Brooklyn nights) and other parts a much lighter purple. 2) The same idea but greens or pinks. 3) Rich coloured tiles with lighter walls. 4) Light tiles and dark walls. I don't know whether to go with rich coloured tiles or light tiles or a mix because of the dark work surface and the light cupboards. If you steer me… [cont.]

A. mauve walls with rose accents. avoid dark walls (enough dark with counter & floor) and have warm color to liven all the neutrals.

How do you safely remove old fireplace tiles without breaking them?
Q. I own an old house which has been taken by the city by emminent domain. Of course, I'm not happy that they are tearing down a perfectly good old house, and trying to get the Historical Preservation involved failed. But anyway - the city said I could take whatever I wanted out of the house before they demolished it to make a throughway street. So I've got this beautiful fireplace that has these antique tiles. I would like to know if anyone knows how to remove these old tiles without breaking them or damaging the tiles. Any ideas? Thanks!

A. This is a tough question. You will need to get a strong putty knife and a hammer. Even a chisel. You get behind the tile with the knife or chisel and smack the hammer on the chisel. This will losen the bond. Depending on how well the tiles were installed, they may not come off easily and you will break some. Others may come up rather easily. Best of luck.
